It has been a scorcher of a summer, with many places in the UK and Europe experiencing record-shattering heat. But summer is finally and mercifully drawing to a close and before you know it Christmas will be here. Yes, Christmas. With the weather still on the warm side you may feel it’s entirely too early to start thinking about that, but it is never too early. And for families who are facing financial difficulties, particularly those that have small children (with all of their childish expectations), it’s especially important to start planning for Christmas now.

Actually some experts advise planning for Christmas at the beginning of the year, immediately after the holiday season. Granted, many people are in a financial squeeze at that time and have no desire to look ahead to yet another spending spree. But if you start planning early and plan smart, you’re much less likely to get yourself mired in holiday debt. And spreading the cost of Christmas across the entire year instead of over a few weeks puts much less of a strain on your finances.

But we’re long past January now. No worries, you still time to plan and save. Start by making a budget, even if the prospect seems distasteful to you. Then make a commitment to stick to it. Your budget should be based upon what you can realistically afford without skimping on necessities in order to fund the holidays – and without going too deeply into debt. Give yourself a little bit of slack but don’t go too far over budget or you will have defeated your purpose.

Explore Your Savings Options

Once you have a budget and savings goal in mind, it’s time to start actually saving. If you have a bank savings account, check with your bank and see if they will let you set up a separate pot for your Christmas goal. Many banks do. Another option is a cash ISA (individual savings account). The interest paid on these accounts isn’t exorbitant but it is tax-free.

You may have heard of Christmas savings clubs, which have undergone a bit of a revival in recent years. The typical Christmas club returns savings in December in the form of vouchers, store credit or gift cards. One disadvantage is that they aren’t regulated in the same way as bank and building society accounts. Moreover if a Christmas club goes out of business you may lose all of the money you put into it.

Credit unions might be an option worth considering; some offer schemes that work like other Christmas clubs. And unlike those other clubs they have the advantage of being protected by the FSCS.

Many supermarkets also have Christmas savings schemes. Some even offer bonuses equivalent to 4-6.5%, which is significantly better than the returns on many standard savings accounts. There are of course restrictions, most notably that the savers are limited to spending the money only with that retailer. Furthermore in most cases a lost, stolen or damaged card is a total loss; it is like losing money from your wallet. Finally the funds are not ringfenced or protected in any way, so even though it’s unlikely that the supermarket in question will not go out of business, they are under no obligation to keep the Christmas money separate.

Be Diligent, Even At Christmas

Sometimes despite your best efforts – no matter how diligently you save and no matter how bargain-conscious you’ve been throughout the year – you will come up short on cash. Unforeseen expenses and other emergencies can leave you with far less money than you’d planned to have for Christmas. In that case it may be appropriate for you to take out a short-term loan. The right kind of loan can make the difference between a bleak Christmas and a happy one.

But it is very important to watch out for the con artists that come along every holiday season and target individuals and families who are facing financial difficulties. There are numerous Christmas money scams that have taken vulnerable people for many thousands of pounds. And even some of the legal lenders take unfair advantage of desperate families at Christmas time. How do you know the crooks from the legitimate players? And of the legitimate lenders, how do you know which one is best for you?

As with anything else having to do with important money matters the key lies in researching your options. If you have to borrow money find the lender who can best serve your needs, and then make a commitment to pay the loan back on a timely basis. Then redouble your efforts to save even more for next Christmas. After all, it will be here before you know it.

Conveyancing a property, especially if it’s your first time, can seem very daunting – and it
definitely can be, why it’s always a good idea to hire a lawyer or licenced conveyancer to take care of
deciphering all the legal jargon and make sure all of the documentation is in order. The last
thing you want is a problem in the wording of a contract causing issues on your hand-over
day.

While you might not know the ins and outs of conveyancing, there are a few things you
can do to make sure everything goes to plan on your big day.

Selecting Your Conveyancer

The first thing to know is that conveyancers (or lawyers) are not all equal – they will
have different methods in place, have different levels of attention to detail, and place
varying levels of importance on client communication. While the best way to find someone
you can trust is to ask friends and family for recommendations, if that comes up dry then you
may need to source one another way.

Narrow your search parameters to the geographical limits you are comfortable with, jot
down some promising-sounding names, and then research – check their website and look for
reviews. Make sure you contact them directly too. Some helpful questions to ask
include:

What types of property do you specialise in?

What fees do you charge?

Are there any extra costs not included upfront?

What sort of information will you communicate with me?

What sort of timeframes can I expect on document turnarounds?

Make sure that whoever you go with makes you feel confident and at ease. Don’t let
fancy talking sway you if you just don’t like them.

Understanding What They Do

It helps to have a basic idea of what your conveyancer is taking care of behind the scenes;
that way, you’ll know if they try and charge you for unnecessary costs and won’t feel as
though you are blindly trusting someone with this huge purchase (or sale).

Conveyancers take care of the entirety of the legal transfer of property ownership. This
includes things like doing a property title search, going over the contract of sale, dealing with
the deposit money, calculating the adjustment of rates and taxes, and settling the
property.

Many conveyancers utilise designated software and online solutions to take care of the research
parts of the job. Specialist legal software and conveyancing services companies like GlobalX Legal Solutions provide services including the provision of accurate, trusted and critical information to conveyancers throughout this process. Your
conveyancer should always be acting on your behalf, so if at any point you are feeling
uncomfortable, make sure you speak to them about your feelings.

Settlement Day

If you’ve done your homework and gone with a reputable solicitor, you can sit back, collect
your keys, and begin the task of moving! Don’t get overwhelmed and try to enjoy the
process.

Organising the conveyancing of a property can feel out of your depth, but if you invest a
bit of time and research your options carefully, your dream home is definitely within reach.
Have you gone through the conveyancing process recently? Share your experiences
below.

An exhibition stand at a trade show can be an effective channel to get the word out there about your brand and your product or service. However, many businesses don’t show themselves in the best light at exhibitions. Walk the aisles at your next exhibition and you’ll see stands that are messy, full of poorly designed marketing collateral and manned by disinterested staff. It’s not a good look for any business, and will likely reduce the chances of that business experiencing positive outcomes from the exhibition. This article will discuss four ways you can run a highly professional, highly profitable stand at an exhibition or trade show.

1. Display For The Right Space

It’s important to find out from the organisers how much space you’ve been delegated before you begin to design your display. This is fairly simple to do – most contracts for booth space are often priced based on the size of the booth. Ensure you have enough equipment and material in your booth so that the display looks rich and inviting, not sparse and empty. In saying that, you also need to be careful that your booth isn’t so packed full of material and collateral that it intimidates potential customers. To really get the balance right, it’s worth contracting a specialist marketing display company such as Tenji Concepts.

2. Cross Promotion Is Key

Expos provide a number of opportunities for cross promotion and collaboration. If you’re only selling one product or service, then do you really need a whole booth for yourself? Would it be better for your customers if you were co-located with a number of other businesses that were offering products and services that complement your own? Consider the opportunities for cross promotion at your next trade show – it’s a great way to keep costs down and reach established customer groups.

3. Run A Competition

You may be one of a hundred or thousand booths at your trade show, so you will need to do something unique or interesting to ensure potential customers stop at your booth and engage with your salespeople. Many stands try to stand out by running competitions for their customers. The prize can be something as simple as clothing with your branding or vouchers for your store. The most effective competitions offer something that is universally interesting and desired, like a piece of consumer technology. Think about what information you want from your potential customers when they enter – this is a good opportunity to conduct some basic market or demographics research.

4. Be Knowledgeable

If the trade show goes for a few days, you might want to consider who’s going to help you run the stand – you can’t do it all on your own! It’s great if you’ve got willing family members or friends to help you run it, but you need to make sure they know enough about the brand and your products or services to do the job. There’s nothing worse than going up to an exhibition stand to find out some information, only to find the staff member knows as little about the product as you do.

Exhibition stands are a really great way to generate potential new business. They are often expensive, so if you’re going to do it – remember to do it well.

Workplace emergencies can strike at any time, so it’s essential that effective plans be put in place to reduce damage, injury and even loss of life. Workers affected by any serious injury or illness that occurred at work should not only report the incident as soon as possible, but also seek advice from legal professionals like Sinnamon Lawyers . There may be support available that can help affected workers get back of their feet. Below are some guidelines on reducing the likelihood of emergencies at work through planning.

Train Staff to Respond to Emergencies

Train key team members so that they have the knowledge to respond effectively in the case of an emergency. This could mean different things depending on the workplace and context, but should include how to deal with an unfolding emergency, how to identify hazards, and how to manage people during unsafe situations. Ensure that there are workers with current first aid certificates on every shift so there is always someone who is trained to assist with an immediate medical response.

Implement Workplace Safety Measures

A workplace that has a commitment to safety can reduce their chances of a medical or injury related emergency arising. An important part of implementing effective workplace safety measures is periodically review and reporting on effectiveness. This can mean inspections of machinery and equipment, training refreshers for staff to ensure they are completing duties in the correct way, and ongoing monitoring to ensure staff are actually complying with these procedures.

Have an Evacuation Plan

Some emergencies such as fire, chemical spill or bomb threat may warrant the complete evacuation of the building. It’s important that businesses have a plan for where everyone (including customers) will meet and how everyone will be accounted for. Unfolding emergencies are often chaotic and require direct action. It’s important that if the alarm needs to be raised, a coordinated and methodical evacuation plan has been developed and is ready to put into action.

Install Emergency Protection Systems and Equipment

Emergency protection equipment not only helps to save lives during an emergency but also can contain injuries, and limit damage caused to a building. Protection equipment for your workplace could include fire hoses and extinguishers, first aid equipment and chemical spill kits. Consider protection systems such as alarm systems and other emergency communication systems.

Seek Professional Help

It is difficult for businesses to effectively implement all of the necessary emergency procedures. There are a number of emergency consultants who can establish the correct framework for your environment. These consultants can also advise on the relevant legislation for your area, so you can be confident that you’re meeting all of your legal obligations with regard to safety.

By training staff, implementing safety procedures and providing access to the right equipment to combat an emergency situation, businesses can respond more effectively to emergencies and minimise their impact. When lives are potentially at stake, taking action to prevent emergencies in any way possible is something that should always be looked at.

Every year, mobile technology gets more exciting and more amazing. We’ve already come such a long way since the massive mobile phones of the ‘80s! Now, there’s an app for just about anything you could want your phone or tablet to do. As well as enriching our personal and social lives, advancements in mobile technology have also unlocked new possibilities for businesses and professionals – from networking via the LinkedIn app to taking part in conference calls from the convenience of home.

But it’s one thing for your company to simply have access to this technology… it’s another, vastly superior thing to be taking full advantage of these wonders. Below are some tips for how to make the most out of these excellent devices.

1. The Best Devices

If you had the latest, greatest devices six months ago, there’s a fair chance you no longer do now! To ensure your workforce is at the top of their game, it’s a good idea to regularly check that they have the best mobile devices available. If you’re not sure if this is the case, a company that specialises in mobile technology, like Com2, can quickly determine this for you and then work out the best modern devices for your company.

2. Training Your Staff

If your staff lack the knowledge and skills to take advantage of the mobile technology you’ve invested in, you’ll have wasted money on that technology. Looking into and arranging appropriate training for your staff, whether it’s a weekend course or an on-site seminar, will ensure that they are using the technology as efficiently and beneficially as possible. Remember: a tool is only as useful or useless as the human being who uses it!

3. Training Yourself

Even if your staff will mainly be the ones using the mobile technology, it’s important that you understand how it works as well. Besides, once you know how to, you’re sure to find that using the technology will save you time and make lots of your tasks easier. For business owners, one of the core benefits of mobile technology is that they can get extra stuff done at home that they previously had to stay in the office to do. Plus, receiving training alongside your staff creates the perfect opportunity to build rapport with your employees while also gaining their respect.

4. Changing Your Mindset

A trap that many businesses fall into is changing their technology without changing their approach to work in general. Now that you’ve got this great mobile technology at your disposal, take advantage of it! Hire staff that are perfect for the job, even if they don’t live locally. Send your staff to more conferences and let them work while out of the office. Give your employees more flexible working hours. Now that your technology has more freedom than ever before, open your thinking to match it.

Mobile technology is providing modern workplaces with endless possibilities for improvements in the ways they do things. If you’re been forward-thinking enough to invest in mobile technology for your work team, make sure to follow the above tips to ensure you’re fully leveraging this.

Have you been nominated to organise your company’s next event?

Believe us when we say that organising an event is no mean feat, particularly if you haven’t done it many times before. Whether it’s a product launch, conference or exhibition, your event will require plenty of planning – from selecting the tastiest canapés and booking entertainment, to organising transport for your guests to and from the venue (and of course, remembering to book the venue in the first place).

Needless to say, event organisers certainly have their work cut out for them, and it’s true what they say: failing to plan is planning to fail. So, if you want to make your event one to remember (for all the right reasons), then you must have these following qualities:

Organisation

Above all else, being organised is essential for planning an event. It doesn’t matter if there will be 100 or 1,000 attendees; there are so many little details that need to be considered with any event. Keeping organised helps you to multi-task and manage all of those so-called ‘little details’ at the same time, ensuring that you aren’t missing anything out.

Being organised involves holding meetings, creating lists and working to deadlines. It means creating a step-by-step plan of everything you must do between now and the event, so you can allocate your time wisely in order to get everything done.

Time-management

Time-management is another essential quality of any great event planner. Managing your time effectively will require you to set timeframes for each individual task, ensuring that you work hard to meet those deadlines. Of course, you should expect one or two things to take more time than initially planned, but this should have been accounted for from the outset.

Budgeting

As well as managing your time, you need to be excellent in managing money, AKA the event budget. You should budget right at the very start of the planning process so you know exactly how much money you’ve got to work with. You need to allocate your budget wisely, tracking every bit of expenditure along the way and ensuring you’ve got some money spare in case of any hidden costs, of which there will be a few.

Communication skills

An event organiser must have great communication skills, as the role requires them to liaise with many different individuals on a day-to-day basis. Having good communication skills means ensuring that everyone is kept ‘in the loop’ about the progress of your event.

As well as being a good communicator, you need to be a good listener. You need to take any comments and feedback on board, as considering the views of other people will help you to organise the perfect event.

Adaptability

Another quality all event planners must have is the ability to adapt. No event runs 100% smoothly, regardless of how experienced the person organising it is. Preparing for potential problems means that you are able to adapt quickly and efficiently should you need to. It could be that a caterer has pulled out last minute, or that you need to book additional transport; whatever it is, proper planning will ensure that you are able to adapt at any time.

Creativity

If you really want your event to be one to remember, you need to get your creative juices flowing. A great event planner will be able to come up with original and innovative ideas to make sure their guests have a fantastic experience. From the food and venue to the entertainment, you need to ensure that your event reflects your brand in the best way possible.

The construction industry has many safety policies and standards that workers have to follow. These policies have been implemented to keep workers safe, but there are many additional ways to keep you and your workmates protected.

Invest in Quality Equipment

Yep, you might pick up your safety helmet every day with a bit of a sigh. But the reason you put it on is to protect yourself from injury. Not just for your own sake, but also for those who care about you. Don’t skimp when purchasing personal protection equipment (PPE) – buy high quality equipment from specialty retailers such as www.safeatheightsqld.com.au. Working in the construction industry does pose risks, so take the time to check out the correct equipment for your needs.

Know Your Stuff

You probably have a general understanding of the required PPE and use it all the time. But are you certain those buckles, latches and anchors can stand up to your needs? Have you attached your harness correctly? Taking the time to learn the proper ways to use your equipment could save you from a fall. Definitely worth it, right?

Assess the Job and Use the Appropriate Equipment

Each construction project is going to have its own requirements. Know what they are before you get started. This gives you the opportunity to carefully select the necessary equipment for the task. If you are going to be working at heights, you will need to be familiar with fall arrestors, safety harnesses and roof safety kits. Using the equipment correctly reduces the risk of injury, so take the time to learn how to attach, fit and operate each component.

Check Your Equipment

If you are using harnesses or ropes that are frayed, or hardware that is bent or worn, then it’s time to replace it. Carry out regular checks of your equipment so you get to know each bump, lock and screw. This makes it so much easier to pick up any changes before they compromise your safety.

An Investment in Your Health

In the same way paying for a gym membership is an investment in your fitness, purchasing quality equipment can help keep you safe. Consider this idea – put equipment for the construction industry in the same category as equipment for recreational sports. Would you abseil without the best ropes, harnesses and safety gloves? Would you step in front of a cricket ball, or baseball at full pace without a helmet? Not likely. World class athletes have to protect themselves from injury, you and your workmates should too.

The construction industry is so diverse, there is no one-size-fits-all remedy when it comes to safety equipment. While you might understand the need to wear your personal protection equipment, it can be difficult to make a direct association with your health. Changing your mindset about the equipment makes it easier to put it on every day.

What are some other tips you share with your workers about personal protection equipment?

In a perfect world your business would be the only one. In reality this is both impossible and, thanks to anti-monopoly laws – illegal. So the game is on and you’re forced to find a competitive edge over other businesses. Here are four practices your business must implement to gain a competitive advantage in your relevant industry.

Critical thinking: Know your customers

You’d be surprised how many businesses operate without a hint of idea who they operate for; they just launch a product or service in hope that somebody out there will find it useful or interesting. By learning more about the market and your potential customers you can gain a great advantage over your competitors. Answer these simple questions – what are you selling, who are you selling to and why do they need it? This basic knowledge will be enough to start making the right decisions.

Know your competitors

In the market there is you, your customers, and your competitors; all are equally important. Spend some time researching your competitors, their strategies, the way they are different from you and how they stand out from the crowd. Do not be intimidated by bigger, better run companies, but learn from the best and implement the most advantageous solutions in your own business.

Build solid foundations

Invest at the start and you won’t have to fix it later. It’s quite simple really, if you have the best team and the best product, you are on the way to being the best – period. What will also help is having the best marketing strategy and the best infrastructure. In today’s world, infrastructure means more than office furniture or vehicles. What’s even more important, is your IT hardware and software. To get an edge over your competitors it might be a good idea to ask professionals, like Keyspace, to take care of this complicated issues. Build your business on solid foundations and you’ll ensure a steady and dynamic growth even in difficult times.

Listen, learn, respond (fast)

In the age of internet you can be and should be communicating with your customers on a daily basis. Remember, social media is there for much more than posting photos of cute cats. Your Facebook page can be much more than one sided monologue from you to your customers. Change it into an interactive platform where you actually communicate with your clients, gather their opinions, and listen. But don’t stop just there. Once you learn what your customers want, provide for them. Analyze what you see and try to implement it in your business, improve your service and product and fulfill your customer’s wishes. Clients like to be listened to and taken care of, and if they see you actually respond to their needs, they will choose you over your competitors.

How to get a competitive edge over you competitors? By reading this article you already have – finding time to think about improving your business is the first step to getting ahead of the game.

Here are some Franchises to Consider appeared first on FinanceBlogNews.

People often consider purchasing a franchise to give them business ownership, flexibility with hours and the opportunity to build the franchise up. Owing a franchise can give you independence from the demands of a difficult boss and can also give you the chance to express creativity and give you a sense of achievement through your own work. Make sure to read the Franchise Guide before embarking on any purchase. You must also decide whether you want a franchise that deals with the provision of services or the selling of goods and products.

Fast Food Outlet

All of the big fast food outlets are franchised. Most of them are already well established and have made a good reputation for themselves. Because of this, these fast food outlets are constantly expanding. Look at where new housing estates are being built, with new shopping centres being erected. Do your research in these areas.

Bakery

The smell of freshly baked bread swirling through the area always has the ability to entice buyers, whether they set out to buy bread or not! The well-known bakery companies are all franchised and established in shopping centres where you can get a large passing trade. Look for established bakeries in big market areas or look for bakeries about to be established in new growth areas.

Mobile Coffee Van

Since the advent of these vans, no one needs to go without coffee. A lot of people are big coffee drinkers and provided you have a supply of good grade coffee beans, you will keep a lot of people happy. Set up the van at weekend markets, festivals, construction worksites or late at night in the city precincts and you will have a constant stream of customers. People love the convenience of a hot takeaway coffee while strolling leisurely through weekend markets or the handiness of grabbing a coffee and have it finished before you get to work.

Home and Yard Maintenance

More and more people are engaging the services of handymen. Time is at a premium for many people and having the yard maintained or a few odd jobs done around the home, means that is one less thing they have to worry about. In climates where the grass grows abundantly, you will be kept in constant employment.

Cleaning Service

There are many different types of cleaning franchises available such as domestic cleaning, bond cleaning and commercial cleaning. Many cleaning franchises are already well established with good reputations. Have a look at AMC Commercial Cleaning to gain some insight into what services they offer.

You should also consider the growth market and whether the franchise is a fad which could therefore be short lived. Look at competition and whether competitiveness can be maintained. Before committing to purchase a new franchise, look at whether it has appeal for the Australian market. Most franchisees are motivated people who actually enjoy running their own business. Research has shown that self-employed people are much more satisfied with their work than their corporate employed counterparts.

Starting a home business has lots of advantages. You get to work in your pyjamas if you feel like it, you save money on fuel and you can grab a home-made coffee whenever you want one. One of the downsides of setting up a business in your home is that you are always at work. For this reason it is important to set aside a space for business. When you leave that space, you leave work.

If you have a spare room this would be the obvious place to set up your business. If you don’t have this luxury you can create an office space in a corner of a room, against a wall or even in the garage. Home office arrangements are really only limited by your imagination.

Furnishings

You can find lots of furnishing ideas for your home office online at A-Mart. Measure your space carefully before making a purchase. Remember, when it comes to furnishing office space less is generally best.

Be Ergonomic

Comfort is incredibly important. Make sure your chair provides enough support; ensure that your computer screen is at eye level and that your arms are parallel to the floor when using your keyboard. These things may sound trifling but they are very important. A poor desk arrangement may result in you suffering frozen shoulder and a sore back. If you have any extra cash, use it to buy the best chair you can afford. You won’t regret it.

Lighting

Your home office will need to be adequately lit. Avoid the darker areas of your home. Try and make the best use of any natural light you have. This will not only provide the best lighting but will also make you feel better. Natural light helps create happiness. Overhead lighting is usually not enough for a home office, so buying a desk lamp is always a good idea.

Storage

One of the biggest dangers of the home business is that will overtake your home. Try and keep your business contained within your office space to avoid it spilling into your living areas. This will help keep a boundary between work and home life. Make sure you have enough storage. There are lots of innovative storage options available. Use space cleverly; utilise the area under your desk and the wall behind your desk for shelving and storage.

Personalise Your Space

One of the other advantages of a home business is that you can personalise your work space. You do not have to spend eight hours in a colourless cubicle any longer! Add some family photos, a plant, and inspirational posters, anything you will enjoy looking at.

Watch the Cords

One thing to definitely avoid in the home office is having unsightly cords everywhere. If you need to pay for an extra power point, do so. Put cords behind furnishings where possible. You can also purchase cord shorteners to help avoid having a bulky mass of lengthy cords to deal with.
