It has been a scorcher of a summer, with many places in the UK and Europe experiencing record-shattering heat. But summer is finally and mercifully drawing to a close and before you know it Christmas will be here. Yes, Christmas. With the weather still on the warm side you may feel it’s entirely too early to start thinking about that, but it is never too early. And for families who are facing financial difficulties, particularly those that have small children (with all of their childish expectations), it’s especially important to start planning for Christmas now.

Actually some experts advise planning for Christmas at the beginning of the year, immediately after the holiday season. Granted, many people are in a financial squeeze at that time and have no desire to look ahead to yet another spending spree. But if you start planning early and plan smart, you’re much less likely to get yourself mired in holiday debt. And spreading the cost of Christmas across the entire year instead of over a few weeks puts much less of a strain on your finances.

But we’re long past January now. No worries, you still time to plan and save. Start by making a budget, even if the prospect seems distasteful to you. Then make a commitment to stick to it. Your budget should be based upon what you can realistically afford without skimping on necessities in order to fund the holidays – and without going too deeply into debt. Give yourself a little bit of slack but don’t go too far over budget or you will have defeated your purpose.

Explore Your Savings Options

Once you have a budget and savings goal in mind, it’s time to start actually saving. If you have a bank savings account, check with your bank and see if they will let you set up a separate pot for your Christmas goal. Many banks do. Another option is a cash ISA (individual savings account). The interest paid on these accounts isn’t exorbitant but it is tax-free.

You may have heard of Christmas savings clubs, which have undergone a bit of a revival in recent years. The typical Christmas club returns savings in December in the form of vouchers, store credit or gift cards. One disadvantage is that they aren’t regulated in the same way as bank and building society accounts. Moreover if a Christmas club goes out of business you may lose all of the money you put into it.

Credit unions might be an option worth considering; some offer schemes that work like other Christmas clubs. And unlike those other clubs they have the advantage of being protected by the FSCS.

Many supermarkets also have Christmas savings schemes. Some even offer bonuses equivalent to 4-6.5%, which is significantly better than the returns on many standard savings accounts. There are of course restrictions, most notably that the savers are limited to spending the money only with that retailer. Furthermore in most cases a lost, stolen or damaged card is a total loss; it is like losing money from your wallet. Finally the funds are not ringfenced or protected in any way, so even though it’s unlikely that the supermarket in question will not go out of business, they are under no obligation to keep the Christmas money separate.

Be Diligent, Even At Christmas

Sometimes despite your best efforts – no matter how diligently you save and no matter how bargain-conscious you’ve been throughout the year – you will come up short on cash. Unforeseen expenses and other emergencies can leave you with far less money than you’d planned to have for Christmas. In that case it may be appropriate for you to take out a short-term loan. The right kind of loan can make the difference between a bleak Christmas and a happy one.

But it is very important to watch out for the con artists that come along every holiday season and target individuals and families who are facing financial difficulties. There are numerous Christmas money scams that have taken vulnerable people for many thousands of pounds. And even some of the legal lenders take unfair advantage of desperate families at Christmas time. How do you know the crooks from the legitimate players? And of the legitimate lenders, how do you know which one is best for you?

As with anything else having to do with important money matters the key lies in researching your options. If you have to borrow money find the lender who can best serve your needs, and then make a commitment to pay the loan back on a timely basis. Then redouble your efforts to save even more for next Christmas. After all, it will be here before you know it.

Conveyancing a property, especially if it’s your first time, can seem very daunting – and it
definitely can be, why it’s always a good idea to hire a lawyer or licenced conveyancer to take care of
deciphering all the legal jargon and make sure all of the documentation is in order. The last
thing you want is a problem in the wording of a contract causing issues on your hand-over
day.

While you might not know the ins and outs of conveyancing, there are a few things you
can do to make sure everything goes to plan on your big day.

Selecting Your Conveyancer

The first thing to know is that conveyancers (or lawyers) are not all equal – they will
have different methods in place, have different levels of attention to detail, and place
varying levels of importance on client communication. While the best way to find someone
you can trust is to ask friends and family for recommendations, if that comes up dry then you
may need to source one another way.

Narrow your search parameters to the geographical limits you are comfortable with, jot
down some promising-sounding names, and then research – check their website and look for
reviews. Make sure you contact them directly too. Some helpful questions to ask
include:

What types of property do you specialise in?

What fees do you charge?

Are there any extra costs not included upfront?

What sort of information will you communicate with me?

What sort of timeframes can I expect on document turnarounds?

Make sure that whoever you go with makes you feel confident and at ease. Don’t let
fancy talking sway you if you just don’t like them.

Understanding What They Do

It helps to have a basic idea of what your conveyancer is taking care of behind the scenes;
that way, you’ll know if they try and charge you for unnecessary costs and won’t feel as
though you are blindly trusting someone with this huge purchase (or sale).

Conveyancers take care of the entirety of the legal transfer of property ownership. This
includes things like doing a property title search, going over the contract of sale, dealing with
the deposit money, calculating the adjustment of rates and taxes, and settling the
property.

Many conveyancers utilise designated software and online solutions to take care of the research
parts of the job. Specialist legal software and conveyancing services companies like GlobalX Legal Solutions provide services including the provision of accurate, trusted and critical information to conveyancers throughout this process. Your
conveyancer should always be acting on your behalf, so if at any point you are feeling
uncomfortable, make sure you speak to them about your feelings.

Settlement Day

If you’ve done your homework and gone with a reputable solicitor, you can sit back, collect
your keys, and begin the task of moving! Don’t get overwhelmed and try to enjoy the
process.

Organising the conveyancing of a property can feel out of your depth, but if you invest a
bit of time and research your options carefully, your dream home is definitely within reach.
Have you gone through the conveyancing process recently? Share your experiences
below.

Every year, mobile technology gets more exciting and more amazing. We’ve already come such a long way since the massive mobile phones of the ‘80s! Now, there’s an app for just about anything you could want your phone or tablet to do. As well as enriching our personal and social lives, advancements in mobile technology have also unlocked new possibilities for businesses and professionals – from networking via the LinkedIn app to taking part in conference calls from the convenience of home.

But it’s one thing for your company to simply have access to this technology… it’s another, vastly superior thing to be taking full advantage of these wonders. Below are some tips for how to make the most out of these excellent devices.

1. The Best Devices

If you had the latest, greatest devices six months ago, there’s a fair chance you no longer do now! To ensure your workforce is at the top of their game, it’s a good idea to regularly check that they have the best mobile devices available. If you’re not sure if this is the case, a company that specialises in mobile technology, like Com2, can quickly determine this for you and then work out the best modern devices for your company.

2. Training Your Staff

If your staff lack the knowledge and skills to take advantage of the mobile technology you’ve invested in, you’ll have wasted money on that technology. Looking into and arranging appropriate training for your staff, whether it’s a weekend course or an on-site seminar, will ensure that they are using the technology as efficiently and beneficially as possible. Remember: a tool is only as useful or useless as the human being who uses it!

3. Training Yourself

Even if your staff will mainly be the ones using the mobile technology, it’s important that you understand how it works as well. Besides, once you know how to, you’re sure to find that using the technology will save you time and make lots of your tasks easier. For business owners, one of the core benefits of mobile technology is that they can get extra stuff done at home that they previously had to stay in the office to do. Plus, receiving training alongside your staff creates the perfect opportunity to build rapport with your employees while also gaining their respect.

4. Changing Your Mindset

A trap that many businesses fall into is changing their technology without changing their approach to work in general. Now that you’ve got this great mobile technology at your disposal, take advantage of it! Hire staff that are perfect for the job, even if they don’t live locally. Send your staff to more conferences and let them work while out of the office. Give your employees more flexible working hours. Now that your technology has more freedom than ever before, open your thinking to match it.

Mobile technology is providing modern workplaces with endless possibilities for improvements in the ways they do things. If you’re been forward-thinking enough to invest in mobile technology for your work team, make sure to follow the above tips to ensure you’re fully leveraging this.

After a brief period following the housing boom which ended in 2007, property prices appear to be on the rise once again. The average house price in many parts of the UK is over £200,000 which makes home-ownership something people on modest incomes can only dream of. To try and remedy this, a scheme launched by the government could make buying a home a little less unaffordable.

Help to Buy, launched earlier this year by the coalition government, was designed to try and give both first-time buyers and property developers a much-needed boost. The scheme, part of which has already been rolled out, could be a success, but concerns voiced by the likes of Vince Cable might help to undermine how effective it becomes.

Broadened scope

While initially aimed at first-time buyers, once the second part of Help to Buy is rolled out, eligibility will extend to existing homeowners. The two strands of the scheme are:

Equity Loans

After a deposit of 5% is paid for a home, a further loan equating to 20% of a property’s value is loaned out by the government

The equity loan is interest-free for the first five years

Only homes worth less than £600,000 are eligible

This is for first-time buyers only

Mortgage Guarantee

Funding of £12bn provided by government to enable easing of lending restrictions by banks and building societies

Homes worth under £600,000 are eligible

First-time and existing homeowners can take advantage

Further details to be announced in due course

The sketchiness over the Mortgage Guarantee may suggest that there is room for improvement with the scheme. For now, fears that the scheme’s potential popularity may help to create a new housing bubble, rendering the scheme a failure.

Lenders more receptive

As a response to the scheme being rolled out, some mainstream high street lenders are starting to lend a little more money in the form of mortgages. About his company’s lending activity, which saw £925m borrowed by customers in the first quarter of 2013, Chris Pilling, Chief Executive of Yorkshire Building Society said:

“Our fundamental aims as a building society – helping people to save for the future and buy their own home – are unwavering and being so closely rooted in our communities makes us ideally placed to achieve them.

It’s a well-known fact that energy is one of the hottest topics of discussion right now. Many politicians, business owners and industry analysts wonder about the future of the UK’s energy supply, whether renewable energy will become the norm and if the current trend of rising costs for gas and electricity will continue to prevail.

Businesses and households are among those affected most adversely by rising energy costs. Some of the UK’s biggest energy suppliers including Centrica, the owner of British Gas, have hiked their priced up astronomically, much to the dismay of their customers. It’s likely that prices may rise even higher in the next few years, but why?

Crumbling infrastructure

Any future energy price rises will be down to two factors: dwindling natural resources and the updating of energy supplies by moving to renewable technologies. The latter in particular is important, and many people are calling on the government to invest in new green technology to help meet the energy needs of business and domestic customers alike.

What stands in the way of large-scale investment is austerity. The coalition government are looking to reduce the growing levels of debt and are going down the cost-cutting path. However, some areas like defence are being ring-fenced from cuts, with this particular department receiving a £40bn subsidy, ten times that of the Department of Energy and Climate Change.

Not helping themselves

At the same time, many of the UK’s biggest energy suppliers are making significant profits, with Centrica being chief among them. They recently announced profits of £600m for British Gas and £2.7bn for the wider group. Much of those profits could be ploughed into renewable energy, but they seem to be putting shareholders first.

Flying the eco flag

To provide security for future years, the current and future governments should prioritise energy above all else, as it makes the country run. If it means slicing funding for defence, then so be it, as it’s what homes and businesses would like more.

Communication – we would all be lost without it. From exchanging pleasantries with your next door neighbor to holding a high-powered meeting with your company’s most lucrative client, it’s good to talk; but face-to-face communication isn’t possible all the time, especially if the people or organisations you want to be in touch with are on the other side of the world.

Technology to the rescue?

In situations where meeting someone in person is rendered impossible because of time constraints, or because you or they lack the means to get to them, technology could help. In the past, a simple phone call was the next best thing; but in the past few years, the growth of video conferencing technology has proved to be a lifesaver for businesses and public sector organisations.

Video conferencing could be used in a variety of different settings for business benefits in remote working, as a one-on-one talks, interviews, group meetings, lectures or even to keep in touch with distant family members. As picture quality improves and delays become less frequent, it’s possible that video conferencing could become the next big thing in telecoms. Here are a few examples of where and how it could be used in the future:

Military precision

In the armed forces, video conferencing could become useful for strategic purposes – different groups stationed in different parts of a warzone could communicate the night before a big attack, for example. Also, it could enable soldiers to contact relatives after training to reassure them that they’re fine.

Distance learning

Learning at home could become a reality for more and more students – especially those who want to gain a degree that live in remote areas. They could watch lectures, seminars or workshops beamed live onto their computer screen straight from their university, meaning they won’t feel like they’re missing out just because of travel issues.

“Distance learning, with the help of video conferencing, will become possible for thousands, if not millions of students in higher education. However, it could also help to make learning a little more interactive, something that school students in particular could lap up as they see the world from their computer screen”, said the international finance specialists at financial-chaos.com.

Law and order

In the legal world, video conferencing could play a big role in reducing postponed trials. How this is possible is that judges, jurors, defendants/plaintiffs and solicitors could ‘attend’ trials via video, which could save courts plenty of time and money in the long run, especially if travel issues cause absence from the court itself.

Telemedicine

Hospitals could find video conferencing useful in furthering the education of medical students as they watch live operations from a classroom, as well as by allowing for communication with experts from other hospitals in case of complex operations. Doctors could use it for helping remote patients who need advice but can’t make it to them.

Personal use

For keeping in touch with friends and family who are miles away from home, video conferencing could be the most effective possible tool. It allows for visual communication which a phone call, text message or instant messaging don’t provide.

When it comes to personal finance issues, there is a lot of information to take in and understand. People that are not wealthy look at the people who have extra money in their lives, and say that they are lucky. Far from the truth and far from reality that people who become lucky in their lives have done so with luck. A lot of wealthy people became that way through a system.

That system is easy to understand but hard to follow for most people. Even if some of the steps are followed, there is a feeling that there is hope in the area of extra money that people can have. Here are some savings tips that people can follow and start to feel wealthy.

Tip 1. Live a frugal life.
This doesn’t mean living a poor life where purchase of anything is forbidden for the sake of saving. Be frugal in the sense of looking for deals at the grocery stores, use coupons as much as possible, and be economical at every instance that is appropriate. At the end of the day, monetary savings will start to appear.

Tip 2. Purchase only necessities.
Being a homeowner means that things need fixing or replacing. Appliances can meet the end of the lifespan, windows break, doors need replacing, are just a few of necessary expenses that have to be dealt with. Transportation issues also have to be dealt with to ensure reliability for travel.

Tip 3. Save regularly.
It is a good feeling to see money at the end of the month. Especially when there is a balance in the checking or savings account before the next paycheck arrives. The combination of living a frugal life, along with purchasing only the necessities in life can almost guarantee that there will be money left over.

With a bit of resolve, using any one of these savings tips will produce extra money. Whether it is every week or every month, it is a good feeling when progress is made.

Economic frontiers are nations that are developing but are only now attracting investment capital. Investment capital may have been slowed due to political constraints, such as former Soviet republics that did not allow foreign investing until the early 1990s. Other economic frontiers did not have the institutions that investors could rely upon, whether this was due to a corrupt government or simply a lack of banking infrastructure beyond the local money lender.

Frontier markets are seeing strong growth despite the global economic slow down. Nations like Croatia are growing as their citizens continue to increase their consumptions in an effort to catch up with the traditional members of the European Union. Frontier markets are also growing as local investing opportunities expand. Small businesses learn formal accounting rules, banks adopt investment banking and laws adapt to a global market. Investors, be they wealthy individuals or banks, can now invest in businesses and create investment funds. The shift from government guaranteed pensions to private savings and investment for retirement further fuels investment growth, as money that was confiscated by the government goes into the market and grows private businesses instead. Pension plans that relied upon money in to make payments to pensioners now invest in the stock market and in productive assets, improving returns for retirees while helping the private sector grow.

Investing in frontier markets does pose challenges. There are few investments for the available funds, since few businesses have the necessary level of financial reporting and transparency for investors. Laws can also hinder investment options for outsiders. For example, Croatia’s large pension fund Raiffeisenbank Austria PLC Zagreb contains 31% of the nation’s market and holds over one and a half billion Euros in assets. Yet Croatian law limits 80% of its holdings to Croatia, limiting its ability to invest outside of Croatia. It is also hindered by Croatian law mandating that half of its assets be government bonds; this archaic requirement can be considered a stealth tax, forcing investors to give the Croatian government part of their money and subsidize the government’s debt.

Raiffeisenbank Austria PLC Zagreb or RMPF can invest up to 20% of its holdings in developed nations, but it is further hobbled by the legal guarantees it must keep with its investors. This forces the investment group to remain conservative while it creatively finds ways to guarantee returns even in bad years. The RMPF must search for investment opportunities outside of the few conventional company stocks on the Croatian market to avoid driving up the price of the few shares on the market.

RMPF has managed to return an average return of four to five percent per year, only suffering losses in 2008, the height of the economic downturn. This are impressive returns for an investment fund facing serious limitations due to national law and a global recession that has yet to loosen its grip on the EU.
Other frontier markets continue to register growth as their economies mature, new investment opportunities are created, local populations start to invest and developing nations continue to grow in response to local demand instead of focusing on exports. Investing news reports will show that the frontier markets in the developing world will continue to grow even as the developed world suffers its malaise and debt deleveraging.
